A mobile installation, fabrication and repair service was set up under the name of Agricultural Services to serve the local farming, shooting, forestry and horticultural sectors. Services relating to Citizen Band radios grew more rapidly than other more generic areas of the business and it therefore seemed a natural progression to further develop the electronic and communication products.
During the 1990s, it became apparent that the Citizen Band radio system could no longer provide the extended communication range required by the ever-increasing farm sizes. In response to this change and following considerable research, the Tait and Maxon range of two-way radios was added to Agricultural Services’ portfolio.
Following a visit to Massey Ferguson’s combine plant (Dronningborg, Denmark) in 1995, William received a request from Mark Moore and Jim Potter (both AGCO) to assist with the installation of Global Positioning System (GPS) base stations required for their new FieldStar yield mapping system. As a result, many base stations were installed across the country facilitating the first wide-scale use of yield mapping in the UK. It is interesting to note that some of this infrastructure is still in use today despite it initially being intended as a short-term solution awaiting the development of the first terrestrial GPS correction signal which was marketed as Focus FM.
Agricultural Services was again at the forefront of implementing this fully commercial network. During this time, the company was renamed AS Communications to better reflect the expanding communication services offered.
Following the demise of Focus FM, AS Communications sought an alternative source of GPS correction. OmniSTAR’s HP (High Precision) and VBS (Virtual Base Station) network provided such an alternative and is still sold by our company today.
In early 2003, AS Communications was approached by the Agricultural Division of Trimble Navigation with an offer to become one of only two official Trimble resellers in the UK. Having reached a commercial agreement, AS Communications was successful in selling the first Trimble Autopilot system in Europe later that same year. AS Communications continues to be central in increasing the lead market share held by Trimble in the UK, through the launch of Ez-Guide Plus and Ag GPS 252 receiver which can be configured to use the RTK (Real Time Kinematic) correction signal if high accuracy (25mm) is required. Technology is constantly developing in response to customer requirements as indicated by the recent launch of the award winning Ez-Steer steering assist system.
Today AS Communications (UK) LTD’s dedicated workforce continues to offer our customers the best equipment and product support available. Assisted by the dedication of our suppliers, our commitment to UK agriculture is unfaltering.
